Meshlab is a non-proprietary software that facilitates the processing and editing of 3D triangular meshes and allows the users to add textures and allows editing, inspecting, cleaning, and rendering meshes. The program carries on complex mesh processing tasks and raw data created by 3D digitization tools/devices on the gpl VCG library and rendering of 3D triangular meshes (3D scanning meshes) It also comes with additional features for preparing the model for 3D printing and are widely used for data handling.

Presentation and visualization
For further magnifying the peculiar characteristics of 3D models, Meshlab comes with visualization features such as Shaders and Decorators to present the graphically the specific characteristics of 3D models and possesses total control of changing the camera’s perspective/orthographic view parameters and utilize pre-defined canonical views. The app also features a handy high-resolution screenshot feature that’s extremely useful for graphical documentation of a survey.
The 3D data alignment phase (A.K.A registration) is the most important step in the pipeline for processing 3D scanned data and serves as a medium for providing powerful tools that help in moving the different meshes into a common reference system and manages a huge set of range-maps as well. Meshlabs applies a fine-tuned ICP one to one alignment step, later followed by a global bundle adjustment error-distribution step. Meshlab also comes with the ability to modify face colors and vortex by utilizing a series of Photoshop-like filters (gamma, contrast, brightness, saturation, sharpening, smoothening). Automatic filters automatically calculate Volumetric Obscurance and Ambient Occlusion and to map it to face color or vertex.
Users can fasten the process of transformation of independent acquisitions and point cloud into a single surface triangulated mesh that can be assigned with different algorithmic approaches. It offers multiple alternatives to reconstruct the shape of an object that consists of volumetric (marching cube) to implicit surfaces (Screened Poisson).
Steps to download and install Meshlab
- 1. To save Meshlabs, click on green download button on upper right side of FileProton
- 2. The downloading of Meshlab will begin shortly, wait for a few seconds.
- 3. Search for the .exe file of the program in the download folder where the file is saved.
- 4. Double click on the setup file of Meshlab and follow the installation instructions.
- 5. After completion, you can start the application using the start menu or desktop icon.
